Let your hair down on what many call the most festive day of the year, Fat Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday. “Laissez les bon temps rouler” (let the good times roll) with the 10th annual Fat Tuesday Baytowne Bash Parade rolling through Sandestin. National Naval Aviation Museum: History of Flight

If you’re a fan of flying machines, check out Pensacola’s National Naval Aviation Museum, where you can watch the Blue Angels at practice air show, ride in a Top Gun Air Combat simulator, or catch a movie in a seven-story giant screen Imax theatre. It’s actually located on a naval base, and when you go you can see over 150 stunningly restored aircraft and over 4,000 artifacts representing aviation from across the branches of the military. Best of all? Admission is free. You can also visit the Emil Buehler Naval Aviation Library, where personal and official papers, squadron records, and photo collections relating to naval aviation service can be viewed. If you need a break while visiting this, the largest naval aviation museum in the world, you can stop by the Cubi Bar Café, decorated with plaques from an old Officers’ Club in the Philippines.

Howl at the Moon: Dueling Pianos

After a long day at the beach in Destin, Florida, liven up your night with a trip to Howl at the Moon, a dueling piano rock-n-roll show that gets the audience moving and stomping and having a great time. Howl picks songs that you’ll know and has some of the best piano players in the region who are born entertainers. Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation: Panhandle Arts

The Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation in Destin is one of the top arts organizations serving the counties of Walton and Oskaloosa. The foundation offers educational outreach programs throughout these counties, and focuses on community support. As such, membership with the foundation benefits this work and helps enrich the Destin area with more arts and culture. If you go to visit the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village, you can check out exhibits and performances by artists from near by and far away. The center organizes activities to promote the arts such as the Destin Festival Artist Home Tour, spotlighting local artists who have their work in private homes in communities including Kelly Plantation and Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. The center will be expanding, creating a cultural arts village with an amphitheater with seating to accommodate 1,500 attendees and a village green, where live concerts, festivals, and dance and theatrical presentations can reach the people.

Pensacola Little Theatre: Big Charm

The Pensacola Little Theatre brings the theatre to adults and children of Northwest Florida, allowing them to experience musicals, comedies and much much more, in addition to actually participating in acting classes and full productions themselves. The theatre also works with local schools to nurture children as artistic beings and equip them with the artistic tools that can help them understand their surroundings and lives better. If you’re not the acting type but you want to participate in the theatre there are plenty of opportunities for volunteering, too. The Little Education Department trains performers and designers of all ages, with classes on drama from pre-kindergarten to adult. There are also over 15 shows produced here a year by the participants, helping those involve develop robust skills to create professional theatre productions. Air Force Armament Museum: In Flight

Enjoy free admission at the Air Force Armament Museum in Destin, Florida, where you can explore a collection of weaponry and displays of famous birds of prey including the SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest plane ever built. Planes from the Korean, Vietnam, and Gulf War eras can be seen too and help children and adult visitors alike appreciate or revisit the realities of history. The displays are interactive, making it possibly worth a visit if you have kids who would like to clamber around the cockpit of a historical relic. The place is open Monday through Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. If you go with a group, try to call in advance to ensure the museum isn’t also being visited by another group at the same time – it’s a small place. The museum was built in the 80’s and has a small theater with a short film discussing the history of the base.
